Some of you may have already read my newbie listing in the introduction section.....but my first goat was purchased at an auction by my daughter on June 7. She was the smallest in a group of 3 small typed goats. I have no idea what kind she is or how old. The auctioneer made a big deal about taking the baby away from her mother. After her escaping 2 times the first week that I had her, she has calmed down a lot and become part of the family. She has always been very easy to handle and seems very smart compared to her new playmate a male pygmy now 7 weeks old. I am wondering if she might be older than I thought. I've noticed when I pick her up she has 2 little teats that look bigger to me than what I thought a baby's would be. Should that be a way of measuring her age? There is no way I can count teeth!

length of teat isn't really going to tell you anything about age as some babies have fairly long teats when they are born. If the auctioneer made a "big deal" about taking her from her mother, then I would say she is probably pretty young. Do you have her on milk? If she is under 4 months of age (and I bet she is), she should still be getting milk. A regular human baby bottle will work and so will regular whole milk from the store. You might want to make the holes in the nipple a little larger. I would be giving her milk at least three to four times a day. Start with 6 ounces and see how she does. You may have to put the nipple in her mouth and be very patient.
Altho you have had her for a while----make very sure that she is drinking. That is very important for both babies that you have. Sometimes people tend to take them off milk much too early and the babies don't intake enough fluids.

I disagree she sounds old enough to be weaned and obviously showing no ill effects from being pulled.

Right now I am getting ready to sell two kids who will be just under 3 months old. They are old enough to be weaned and can go to their new homes. THey are drinking fine and eating well enough on their own and have been for weeks now.
