I moved this into it's own topic - this is "Bachelor's" post about the quilt idea (copy and pasted) ...

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
ORIGINAL POST ....
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

There was a great idea over on the homesteader today board where everyone got together and made quilt squares out of similar material. The squares were then mailed out to the "winner" of a drawing and they made the squares into a quilt and took a picture of it for everyone to see.

Of course...ahem... being a man, I couldn't partake in such tomfoolery.... unless I could somehow maintain my manly status......... maybe I could weld a quilt together.......

Anyway, a thought. My wife thought it was a good idea when I mentioned it to her. She said it was one of two good ideas I ever had...... The first of course was choosing the right woman

hmmmm I'm full of myself, and she's full of (SLAP!!!! owwwww.......)

You know that's a fabulous idea..what warmer way to stay in touch than to do it with a quilt square..but much like you Brad, minus the "manly" thing..I CAN'T SEW! I can crochet, but I can't do much past a whip stitch in mending. Momma tried to teach me..but I was stubborn and strong headed and want to play in the oil pan of my Daddies pick up truck, anything but "woman's" work is what I wanted to do.

Alright, I have to come clean. Sorry I have to admit this to you, but I have sewn a quilt. I did have other motives tho. All the girls were in Home Ec, and I couldn't let all them purty young things sew by themselves and......

Alright, now you know.

Anyway, the idea sounded good and Kathy sounded like she would like to do something like that too. It beats her trying so sew all our clothes. Much as she tries, I don't think mauve or tope are my colors.........

I am really not trying to push this.... really...... , but here are the rules that they use if anyone is interested:

For those who are new here is how it works:

Our goal each year is to have 4 Forum Quilts.

January, April, July, October will be sign up months and sending out the fabric. Sign up will occur around the 15th of the month.

February, May, August, November will be the months for doing your square and mailing it back.

Winners will be chosen around the 15th of the month in March, June, September and December.

When you sign up, I will mail you a piece of fabric. Using this fabric and any other fabric you choose, make a block with a finished size of 12 1/2 inches. Make sure all fabric you use has been washed and dried to prevent shrinkage. Please do not use fabric softener.

After you complete the block, mail it back to me so it arrives on or before December 15th. I will pick a winner on December 15th from all the blocks I have received. NO EXCEPTIONS!!! You should plan to mail your block at least 10 days before the deadline.

After you sign up, please send me a private message with your address. If you have participated in a recent quilt and your address is the same, you do not need to send me your address. Also make sure I have your current address, sometimes people move between participating in the quilts.

When I send the fabric, I will send an information sheet that you can fill out about yourself and attach to your block with a safety pin or stapling works well also. If you want to send a contribution for postage that would be deeply appreciated.

Sign up is for this quilt only, you will have to sign up again for future quilts.

Winner is selected at random. All participants names are placed in a hat and one winner is chosen. If you win... You will receive all the blocks that were sent in for this quilt, along with a yard of fabric to use in your quilt. You are then responsible for purchasing fabric for the next quilt. You will need to wash the fabric, cut at least 25 blocks 12 inch blocks,and send them, plus one additional yard of the fabric, to me before the 7th of January. I will not send the blocks to you until I receive the new fabric.

Sign-up is for registered forum members on the 15th,16th, 17th, 18th and 19th. Starting on the 20th we will allow you to sign up for your children. Also starting on the 20th if for some reason you were unable to complete a past quilt block, you will once again be allowed to participate. Please only sign up and commit if you are willing to complete a block and return it before the deadline.

OK, let's get started! I will start mailing out fabric towards the end of the week, and will continue mailing until it is all gone. Please let me know if you do not receive your fabric by the end of the month. There may be extra that can be resent. If you have any questions, please post them here and someone can help you.

I will have to count how many squares we have for this quilt, I think 30 so keep track as you sign up please.

Now personally from the point of being organized..... This woman has got it goin' on!!

I think both the are great ideas, and I would love to do this! As for the quilt that is a neat idea also, but I have never quilted before and the thought of sewing everyones hard work together and possbily messing it up is a little daunting LOL! Don't get me wrong, I can sew and have made several things, but I think I would have to do the same as Pam and take it to the quilt shop!

Now ... as for this idea - I think it sounds like a neat idea also smile And I don't see anything wrong with doing it. So if you's would like to do the "GT Members Quilt" ... then Bachelor (since it's your idea) - perhaps you should post an official topic with the instructions and rules, including the start date, etc. in it's own post in the GAB! GAB! GAB! section.

It might be better to wait until after the holidays to start it - due to everyone being so busy. But you can go ahead and decide/post the start date and everything you need to cover. smile
